Indie Music: As Long as You Have Obscure Lyrics You Don't Need a Good Voice
I've noticed that many indie/indie-rock/alternative/whatevertheheckyouwanttocallthisgenre singers aren't really that great of singers. They usually have pretty limited ranges as well as shaky voices, but somehow it really works with the genre. They're usually pretty good at softly singing their words, then yelling a little at certain points of the song or crackling into their upper register (not a real music term, I made it up and am not even sure what it means). But really, the lead singers for Fun., Death Cab for Cutie, Bon Iver, Bright Eyes, etc. aren't exactly up to speed with Elvis or Beyonce or Adele, but I think its exactly the kind of quivery, soft, sad, smoky sounding voices that make this kind of music so artsy and mellow. I find it beautiful in a way. Good voices are good too, though. But the thing about these indie hipster guys and gals is that their lyrics are deep, unique, poetic, and emotional and in my opinion more original in comparison to most pop music, which is also why I think they can get away with having sub-par voices.
