I've always loved Disney movies. Pocahontas, Lion King, the Little Mermaid, and Bambi being just a few of my favorites. But I realized that if you really think about them the morals of these stories are a little twisted. Let me explain...
First of all-- when speaking strictly about the princesses-- I realized that their clothing isn't exactly "kid friendly." Although I never noticed this as a child I see now that theres a lot of cleavage and bellies being shown by the characters that many little girls want to be when they grow up. For example, Jasmine from Aladdin prancing around in her little puffy-pants and matching bra outfit which later in the movie changes to a saucy red variation in which she tries seducing Jafar as a distraction. There's also darling Ariel, who sports nothing but a green tail and some purple sea shells. My mother wouldn't let me out of the house if I dressed that way.
Secondly, weird plots... Like in The Little Mermaid, little innocent Ariel falls in love, at sixteen, with some hunk after seeing him dance around on a boat. She then "deliberately disobeys" (that gets thrown around a lot in Disney movies) her father, dates the guy she barely knows and can't speak to for a majority of the movie, then marries him AT SIXTEEN. Or like all the movies where moms die? Nemo, Bambi, Cinderella to name a few. Like, what exactly does that teach children?
And thirdly, women are helpless. Although this appears in more of the older Disney flicks, women are portrayed as naive creatures that don't know how to take care of themselves. For example: clumsy Sleeping Beauty who pricks her finger and falls asleep until the prince arrives, Snow White who would've laid in the middle of the forest crying if the deer hadn't arrived to help her find a cottage, and Cinderella who can't take a bath without the help of birds and mice.
Over the years Disney has recieved a lot of criticism for some strange things, and sometimes the messages they're trying to set up for kids seem a little odd, but as children we don't know these things. We sit and watch these movies because the princess is pretty and the scenes are colorful and the songs are catchy. So for those who are actually worried about movies corrupting their kids, calm down. Anything can seem bad if you think about it long enough.
